My story.

Built with data from Autonomy Realms

Everything below is cited to a recording he made on the day it happened. Nine hundred of them, from February 2024 to now, public where the link is live. This is not a summary written after the fact. It is the record, read back.

The trade he had.

He has been programming since the sixth grade. GW-BASIC first, then Pascal, then C, then C++, some Java, and PHP since PHP 3. the languages, 1:07 He has never worked for a company directly. He was self-employed his entire working life. a freelancer all his life, 18:47

He worked on Guru.com, where he reached the top ten in the programming category. He was the only individual there. The other nine were teams that could underbid him. top ten, 10:47 He earned seventy-two thousand dollars on that platform and carries more than forty reviews on it. the reviews, 2:09 He worked for twenty-five different employers there. twenty-five employers, 3:25 He wrote databases for Comcast, including a project they used in the field. Comcast, 2:44

Then he had two clients across twenty years, about ten years each. two clients, 2:46 For one of them he built a music streaming service that tracked royalties on a blockchain and paid band members out through smart contracts at ratios they set themselves. the royalty system, 11:08 He hired and managed programmers for that work, dozens at a time and hundreds over the decade, most of them found on Upwork. managing the team, 21:02

The floor going out.

He moved into an RV in February 2024 because rent kept rising every year and he wanted his expenses low. why the RV, 2:20 His last job ended in October 2024. The page in his own system that tracks the search has entries running from that month forward. the finding-work page, 0:36

He went back to Guru first, because that was the reputation he had spent twenty years building. He was locked out of the account and could not get the platform to help him. locked out, 11:52 Identity verification took eight steps and failed at the last one. the eighth step, 6:23 He got the account back in April 2025, opened the job board, and found the platform dead. A dozen postings in his entire sector that week. He was qualified for two and applied to both. a dead platform, 0:55

Everyone had moved to Upwork, where twenty years of reputation does not transfer and proposals cannot carry links to it. starting from nothing, 2:28 He built the profile anyway and applied for a year. Ninety-five percent of his proposals were never opened by the client. never opened, 2:46 By July 2025 he had been watching that happen for months and said so on camera: “They’re not even read. Like, they’re not even looked at.” not even read, 8:16

He has named the cause on the record repeatedly. “My industry is rapidly changing right now because of artificial intelligence.” the industry changing, 12:31 “AI is taking a lot of the programming jobs now and the work that is available is just saturated with people applying for these jobs.” saturated, 6:09 “It’s completely destabilized my industry.” destabilized, 1:34 He is not hostile to the tool. In the same recording he says it does an amazing job at programming and needs someone to supervise it, and that he uses it for everything.

So he looked for work in town. The towns on that stretch of coast are small. He spent two months at one store, talking to the owner every time he went in, being told each time that he would be hired. The owner finally told him to come in Monday to do the paperwork. He showed up Monday and the owner was at a different store. the store, 11:19 Months later he learned the reason he was never hired was that the owner’s son does not like gay people. the reason, 13:14

He took work at a marina painting. He ruined his clothes and his shoes doing it. He was let go by text message with no notice. the marina, 4:30

He sold what he had. Solar equipment that cost him eight thousand dollars went for twenty-five hundred. the solar, 6:30 A game console went for four hundred. the console, 11:16 In August 2025 he sold the graphics card out of his desktop for two thousand dollars to catch up his Jeep payments and get his internet turned back on. That card was the one he used for AI development. The desktop has not worked since. the graphics card, 28:11

What he built inside it.

He kept recording. Nearly nine hundred videos across the two years, made on the days they describe. nine hundred, 3:47 No platform would hold that. So he wrote one.

Autonomy Realms is the software you are reading this on. Each recording uploads as a signal, transcribes itself, is analyzed for metadata, receives an embedding for semantic search, and can be reflected on in four styles, one of which returns the person to himself without pathologizing him or making him smaller than he is. the reflections, 10:29 Signals cluster, and the clusters are reflected on in turn. Photographs pin to the map where they were taken, and the paths he walked are traced across it. the atlas, 5:15 It is multi-tenant. Anyone can hold their own realm on it, with their own subscription tiers. the system, 10:14

He built it while volunteering, on a laptop, on power he had to generate. “I have been working on this project under serious constraints.” under constraint, 9:15 He built it for himself first and then offered it to other people. for himself first, 0:35 In May 2026, laying out everything he had tried and what each attempt cost, he put it plainly: “The only way I was getting out of this situation is by building Autonomy Realms.” the only way, 4:30

The life on the coast.

In December 2024 he interviewed for a volunteer host position: cleaning cabins in exchange for a campsite for a month. the interview, 2:22 He has been doing that work ever since. In October 2025 he moved from campground host to volunteer caretaker, embedded on federal land rather than inside a campground. the new role, 0:31 The Forest Service trusts him with one of their trucks. He drives a twenty-mile route every day. the route, 4:30

This is the trade, in his own accounting of it. “It gives me a place. It gives me housing. It gives me utilities, power, water. Those are bills that I don’t have to worry about because I volunteer my labor in exchange for those things.” the exchange, 4:30 Said again a few months earlier: “My volunteer role, my rent, my utilities are paid for just by volunteering for an institution that hasn’t tried to screw me like the state parks.” rent and utilities, 16:17

What the trade does not cover is everything else. He lives in a forest outside of town in an RV he describes as falling apart. what is not covered, 4:30 The volunteer day is four hours. four hours, 6:01 His days off are Mondays and Tuesdays. the days off, 8:58 Any paid work he takes has to fit around the service, and the service is what keeps the roof there.

That is the shape of it. The volunteering buys the ground to stand on. It does not buy insurance, fuel, parts, the payments, the server, or the time to finish what he is building.

The ask.

“It’s really unfortunate because I don’t need a lot.” how much, 3:36

A thousand dollars a month covers the gap. Not a salary, not a runway, not a raise. The difference between a life held together by selling equipment and a life with a floor under it, while the work he is doing anyway keeps going.
